  1. A cathedral is a principal church of a bishop
  2. or archbishop, containing his throne which is
  3. usually situated on the south side of the 
  4. choir. A cathedral is governed by a dean and 
  5. chapter. Some British cathedrals, such as 
  6. Lincoln and York, are referred to as 
  7. minsters, the term originating in the name 
  8. given to the bishop and cathedral clergy who 
  9. were often referred to as a monasterium.
  10. Because of their importance, cathedrals were 
  11. for many centuries the main focus of artistic
  12. and architectural endeavour. Their artworks 
  13. include stained glass, frescoes, mosaics, 
  14. carvings in wood and stone, paintings (such 
  15. as altarpieces), ironwork, and textiles.
